  2. Congratulations on your purchase of "Flying Colors!"
  3. To supply you with up-to-the-minute information, we
  4. have included the following:  
  5.  
  6. TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
  7.  
  8. Depending upon your system configuration, creating a 
  9. blank canvas any larger than the size of a Full Printed
  10. Page may cause the performance to be slower or lead 
  11. to an error.
  12.  
  13. VIDEO DISPLAY REQUIREMENTS
  14.  
  15. Flying Colors requires that your video display driver be set to
  16. 256 colors only. If you receive an error message regarding your 
  17. display, check your current video driver.
  18.  
  19. To check your video mode:
  20.  
  21. o    From the Program Manager, double-click the 
  22.     Windows Setup icon in the Main program group.
  23. o    From the Options menu on the Windows Setup box, 
  24.     select Change System Settings. 
  25. o    Click the arrow to the far right of the word "Display".
  26.     You will see a list of video drivers.
  27.  
  28. If your current driver is listed as VGA, or 16 color, you must
  29. change to a higher color driver to run Flying Colors. Consult
  30. your user manual for instructions on how to change or upgrade your
  31. driver.
  32.  
  33.  
  34. ATI MACH32
  35.  
  36. If you are using the ATI video card and driver which utilizes 
  37. the Flex Desk Utility (located in the Main program group) to
  38. change your video resolution, be sure that the Device Bitmaps
  39. option is checked "off". To change this setting: 
  40.  
  41. o    Double click  on the Flex Desk Icon.
  42. o    Click on the "Advanced" button at the first dialog.
  43. o    Click on the "Off" radio button under the heading 
  44.     "Device    Bitmaps". 
  45. o    Choose OK twice to exit Flex Desk.
  46. o    Re-start Windows.
  47.  
  48. For more information about video drivers, please consult your 
  49. Windows documentation. You may also download current video 
  50. drivers from the Microsoft BBS if you have a modem and suitable
  51. communications package. The Microsoft BBS number is 510-736-8343.  
  52.  
  53. ENSONIQ SOUND CARDS
  54.  
  55. If you experience sound problems with the Ensoniq sound card:
  56.  
  57. o    Click on the Control Panel Icon from the Main program
  58.     group.
  59. o    Click on the Drivers Icon.
  60. o    Select "Soundscape DVD MIDI, WAVE, AUX".
  61. o    Under the section "Wave Playback DMA",    set "Wave A"
  62.     to "0".
  63. o    Click on the "Test" button and verify that the status 
  64.     line at the bottom says "Driver OK".
  65. o    Choose "OK".
  66. o    Exit the Control Panel by double clicking on the upper left
  67.     menu bar.
  68. o    You may have to re-start Windows if changes were made.
  69.

  72. IF THE PROGRAM IS VERY SLOW
  73.  
  74. Close any unnecessary applications, that may be running.  If 
  75. you have a 33MHz 386 or faster processor, be sure you are running 
  76. Windows in enhanced mode. Also be sure that the Virtual 
  77. memory settings are active. To check the Virtual memory 
  78. settings:
  79.  
  80. o    Click on the Control Panel Icon from the Main program
  81.     group.
  82. o    Click on the 386 Enhanced Icon.
  83. o    Choose Virtual memory and verify the settings.
  84.     We require the Virtual memory setting to be a minimum of
  85.     8000KB for the permanent swap file.
  86. o    To make changes to the settings, consult your 
  87.     Windows documentation.
  88.  
  89. PC TOOLS VSAFE and MS-DOS VSAFE
  90.  
  91. PC Tools VSAFE or MS-DOS 6.0 VSAFE may interfere with the 
  92. install process. To disable VSAFE before installing "Flying Colors",
  93. exit Windows and type VSAFE /U, then press 
  94. Enter. 
  95.  
  96. Restart your computer after installation of "Flying Colors" to turn
  97. PC Tools VSAFE or MS-DOS VSAFE back on.
  98.  
  99. TANDY SENSATION USERS
  100.  
  101. Tandy's WinMate system does not automatically create the 
  102. "Flying Colors" icon or launch our program. We 
  103. suggest disabling WinMate and running directly from 
  104. Windows. If you have further questions about Tandy's 
  105. WinMate, please call Tandy Technical Support at (817) 878-
  106. 6875.
  107.  
  108. SCREEN SAVERS
  109.  
  110. If you are running a screen saver in the background, you may 
  111. experience video problems during the program. Disable the 
  112. screen saver and this should solve the problem.
  113.  
  114. NORTON DESKTOP, KIDDESK, PCTOOLS, TABWORKS  OR OTHER 
  115. WINDOWS PROGRAM SHELLS
  116.  
  117. If you are using a program shell other than the Windows 
  118. Default Program Manager and experience trouble running the 
  119. Setup installation program or launching the program, try 
  120. changing the shell to the Windows' Program Manager.
  121.  
  122. To change the program shell:
  123.  
  124. o    First make a back up of your SYSTEM.INI file. Make 
  125.     NO changes to this file until you have an accessible 
  126.     backup in case you encounter problems.
  127. o    Using the Windows Accessory Notepad (or any 
  128.     other text only editor), open the SYSTEM..INI file 
  129.     located in the C:\WINDOWS directory.
  130. o    Under the heading [boot], find the section "Shell=".
  131. o     Place a ";" in front of this line and then insert a 
  132.     carriage return and type the line again without the ";".
  133. o    Change the new shell= line to "shell=progman.exe". 
  134.  
  135. When you are finished the lines should look as follows:
  136.  
  137. ;shell=XXXXXXX
  138. shell=progman.exe
  139.  
  140. Save the file and re-start Windows. Then click on the Flying Colors icon,
  141. or run the installation program.
  142.  
  143. To return to your original program shell:
  144.  
  145. o    Open the SYSTEM.INI file using your text editor.
  146. o    Delete the ";" in front of the old shell=XXXXXXX".
  147. o    Place a ";" in front of the line which reads 
  148.     "shell=progman.exe".
  149. o    Save the file and re-start Windows.
  150.  
  151. ERROR MESSAGES
  152.  
  153. If you receive an error message specifying a particular file 
  154. name, check that the following files are installed:
  155.  
  156. DIB.DRV         installed to WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory
  157. FLYC.EXE     installed to FLYINGC directory (hard drive install only)
  158.  
  159. If either of these files are missing, run Setup again to re-install 
  160. them. You may also copy DIB.DRV directly from the CD.
  161.  
  162. PROGRAM WON'T LAUNCH OR "OUT OF MEMORY" ERROR
  163.  
  164. Be sure your Virtual memory is set to permanent and that you 
  165. are using a swap file of at least 8000KB. Consult your 
  166. Windows documentation on how to set swap file sizes.
  167.  
  168. Also check your CONFIG.SYS file located in the root directory 
  169. (C:\ on most machines) for the line FILES=    .  On some 
  170. machines, changing the FILES line to FILES=99 may solve the 
  171. problem. Be sure to re-boot after making any changes to this 
  172. file.
  173.  
  174. Uninstall
  175. ---------
  176.  
  177. Uninstall can be used to completely remove all "Flying Colors" files
  178. and subdirectories as well as the program group and FLYINGC.INI files.
  179.  
  180. To uninstall "Flying Colors":
  181.  
  182. o    Insert the CD into the CD ROM drive.
  183. o    From File Manager, click on the correct drive letter.
  184. o    From File Manager, choose File - Run and type "SETUP UNINSTALL".
  185.  
  186. If you encounter an error message while running uninstall:
  187.  
  188. o    Check to see that all user created files have been 
  189.     removed from the Flying Colors subdirectory. Uninstall 
  190.     will not delete files created by the user.  User files will 
  191.     have the extension ".bmp".
  192.  
  193. o    Check to see that the file "FLYINGC.INI" exists in 
  194.     your Windows directory and that the line "Program=" 
  195.     points to the Flying Colors sub-directory on your hard drive.
  196.  
  197. To delete "Flying Colors" manually:
  198.  
  199. o    Run the Windows File Manager (or other third party 
  200.     file utility) and highlight the "FLYINGC" directory. 
  201.     Then choose File Delete from the menu options.
  202.  
  203. o    Locate the file "FLYINGC.INI" in the Windows directory and delete
  204.     it.
  205.  
  206. o    From Program Manager (or third party shell) highlight 
  207.     the "Flying Colors" program group (while minimized) and 
  208.     choose File Delete.
  209.
